40 fantasy and sci-fi books you should read in 2022

We recently put together a big guide to every fantasy and sci-fi show you should watch in 2022. Now, we’ll cross over to the written medium to introduce you to all the science fiction and fantasy books coming out this year.

There are a lot of great sci-fi and fantasy books coming out in 2021, and we’ll get more in 2022. We’ve rounded up 40 titles that we think genre readers should pay attention to, because there can never be too many books on one’s to-do list. (Let’s be real here, any of us have only one TBR pile? )

From weird alien universes to epic fantasy worlds, there will be something for most fans of these genres this year. 2022 will see new work from big names such as Brandon Sanderson, Stephen King, Rebecca Roanhorse, Ken Liu and John Scalzi, as well as debuts and sequels from many upcoming authors. This will be a good year in the stack.

There are several great books already hitting shelves in January 2022, and we don’t want you to lose them. So, before we dive into the list, we’d like to briefly touch on the big 2022 releases that are already available at a bookstore or online retailer near you:
