news culture From one of the greatest directors of all time, this sci-fi film had everything it took to break the box office, but it never came out
In a way, cinema is like video games. There’s new stuff every week, but a lot of projects stay on the shelf! Today we are talking about one huge sci-fi movie ever released.
In the constant barrage of theatrical releases (roughly more than ten a week) we sometimes forget that some projects took years to come about… and that many others never saw the light of day! For example, we can talk about the dream of Alejandro Jodorowsky, a Franco-Chilean director who moved heaven and earth to adapt the sci-fi novel Dune, which became a documentary film: Jodorowsky’s Dune. SF feature films are undoubtedly the most complicated, as they require the creation of a universe from scratch, a hell of a budget for costumes, sets and special effects. In the genre, are you familiar with the adaptation of Steven Spielberg’s “Robopocalypse”?
A super ambitious project
Our colleagues fromScreenWide I told you about it not long ago. Before becoming a film project, Robopocalypse was initially a science fiction novel written by Daniel Wilson. It depicts a near future where an artificial intelligence, Archos, has led humanity to its downfall with a war between man and machine. ! “Following publication, the book appeared in the prestigious New York Times | will be received dithyrambic by readers,” notes EcranLarge. For the record, before becoming an author, Daniel H. Wilson worked as an engineer at Microsoft or Intel.
As you can imagine, Robopocalypse’s “pitch” caught the attention of Steven Spielberg, who pay off the rights before its release in 2009 through his company DreamWorks. At that time, the director linked science fiction successes with AI Artificial Intelligence, Minority Report, War of the Worlds. He’s clearly the man for the job and he wants to make things right! Among the actors on board we find in particular the famous Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor at Marvel.

Where is it?
As you can imagine, the film hasn’t been released to date because it got stuck somewhere… Originally scheduled for 2013, the project was shelved in 2014 “indefinitely”. time – in an interview with Weekly entertainment – Spielberg says Robopocalypse costs “a lot of money” and he was looking for a way to tell the story in a “more economical” way | personally”. He continues: “I’m starting a new scenario and we’ll have this film up and running soon”. Years go by, no news. In 2018 we learned that Michael Bay (Transformers | The Island) took over the reins of the adaptation. Maybe one day we’ll see the color, we can still have a surprise.
