Non-profit organization hosts “Forbidden Book” “reading” at Johnston Farmer Market

The Johnston Books Organization is hosting a reading event at the Johnston Farmers Market in September.

A group of Johnston parents, who said they noticed a “worrying” trend that began in 2021 of parents asking school boards to remove books they deemed offensive, set up the Annie Foundation, according to the organization’s website.

Founder and President Sarah Hayden Paris says the new nonprofit’s mission is to ensure that members of the community have access to books that reflect the diversity and complexity of the world around them.

“Basically, we feel it is really important for children to see themselves reflected in the books they read and are provided with,” Hayden Paris said. “They also see books written by authors who are similar to themselves and come from similar backgrounds.”
