Over 20,000 books have been donated to a community Corcoran To promote education and spread a love of reading
Los AngelesAnd the August 29 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Southern California Gas (SoCalGas) and the student-run nonprofit, Reading Heart, have partnered with Corcoran City To host the largest non-profit community-wide book fair ever that offered over 20,000 free books Corcoran population.

“I started Reading Heart to share my love of reading with other kids and I’m so glad we were able to make 20,000 books – one for every Corcoran resident – at the book fair. This is our biggest event to date, and it’s 15-year-old Danae Ferguson,” said Danay Ferguson (15 years old), who founded Reading Heart when she was eight years old: “It would not have been possible without the generous support of SoCalGas.”
The community event was filled with music, games, entertainment and most importantly, piles of books for residents to choose from. The first-of-its-kind event is designed to make books more accessible to students and promote reading in Central Valley where illiteracy is one of the biggest challenges facing young students. Each student who attended the community-wide book fair received a free book and was encouraged to participate in reading challenges hosted by the Reading Heart Center.
In the weeks leading up to the community-wide book fair, Reading Heart hosted three primary school book fairs around town including Bret Hart Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary, and John C. Fremont Elementary. Photos and videos from those events can be found here.

To make this event possible, SoCalGas has donated 6000 dollars to Reading Heart to support its mission so that every child has access to books. Reading Heart is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit book donation program dedicated to serving children in hospitals and children in areas with limited access to books. Reading Heart operates specifically in Central Valley which hosts events and book campaigns in support of underserved communities. Danay started reading Heart at the age of eight because she wanted to share her passion for reading and the joy of escaping in a good book with other kids. Danay, as an avid book reader and advocate for education, wants to spread the joy of reading and improve literacy not only in our community but also across the country.
